Willie Jeffries To Be Honored at BCA Awards BanquetApril 25, 2002Indianapolis, IN - Recently retired South Carolina State football coach Willie Jeffries will be one of the honorees at 2002 The Black Coaches Association (BCA) Awards Banquet. The banquet is the highlight event during the association's national convention held on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Hyatt Regency of Indianapolis.
Mike Davis has proven to be the most successful first year head coach in the 101-year history of Indiana University mens basketball. This year Davis led his team to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 8 years. Marianna Freemans profound impact on and off the court has earned her this years award. Daniel Boggan will be honored for his relentless contributions to the athletic community. Leonard Bishop and his Dallas Lincoln boys basketball team are the 2002 Texas state champions and have two undefeated seasons with a record of 40-0 which earned them the USA Today Scholastic Sport National Number One High School Team. Willie Jeffries coaching career spans across forty decades, nineteen of which he spent at South Carolina State University where he ended his tenure. Jeffries was the first African-American to coach on the NCAA Division I level during his coaching tenure at Wichita State.
The keynote speaker for this years banquet is Lloyd D. Ward, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General, United States Olympic Committee. Ward is the first African American to serve the USOC as its chief executive. Past keynote speakers have included George Frasier, Johnnie Cochran and Kweisi Mfume.
As an association, we are very pleased to recognize this list of distinguished recipients in addition to a renowned keynote speaker the caliber of Mr. Lloyd Ward. All are most certainly at the pinnacle of their profession at the present time, and we are most honored to have them present to accept this honor said Floyd Keith, Executive Director of the Black Coaches Association.
