MEAC announces staff appointments

August 14, 2001

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has announced two appointments to its staff. Marlynn R. Jones, Esq. has been appointed Asst. Commissioner Compliance / External Affairs while Mitchell Jennings has been appointed Interim Asst. Commissioner Media Relations

"I am delighted with both appointments," said Commissioner Charles S. Harris,
"we were very fortunate to have a pool of high quality candidates for the
Compliance position, but it was clear that the combination background and
experience that Ms. Jones brought to the position made her an outstanding
choice."

"In the case of Mitchell Jennings, he has demonstrated a grasp of media
relations and a willingness to work and to continue to be creative in getting
the MEAC message out to the public, I believe he will serve the Conference
well," Harris said.

Jones is a former NCAA staff member and a member of the US Olympic Committee staff for the Atlanta Games.

In accepting the position, Jones stated, "I am excited to return to
intercollegiate athletics and to the state of North Carolina. I look forward
to working with Commissioner Harris and Brenda McCoy and the 11 institutions
in the MEAC."

Jones received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill School of Journalism, a Master of Science degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University, and a law degree from the University of Miami where
she was named the 2000 National Outstanding Law Student of the year (selected
from 176 schools). She was a member of the NCAA staff from 1987-91, she
worked at North Carolina A & T as an Asst. AD in the early 1990's, served as
Interim Director of Scholarship Administration at North Carolina Central
University from 1994-95, was a member of the Atlanta Committee for the
Olympic Games during 1995-96, and worked for the Orange Bowl Committee from 1996-98.

Her most recent appointment was as Chief of Staff for Florida State Senator
Daryl L. Jones, a Gubernatorial Candidate for 2002. Ms. Jones is a certified
court mediator and licensed to practice law in Florida and the District of
Columbia.

Jennings, a member of the MEAC staff for the past four years, most recently served as Asst. Director of Media Relations.

Jennings, a US Navy veteran, and a graduate of North Carolina A & T State
University, joined the MEAC Office in 1997 as a part of the MEAC
Administrative Internship Program. He was appointed Assistant Director of
Media Relations in September 2000. He also served on the Nokia Sugar Bowl
Media Relations staff during the 2000 Sugar Bowl events.

Regarding his appointment, Jennings said, "I feel that I have worked extremely hard to get to this point in my career. I learned early as an intern here, under the tutelage of Mr. Larry Barber, that in order to get this job done, it takes a massive commitment to details, said Jennings. "Words can't describe the honor I feel to be entrusted by Commissioner Harris and Ms. McCoy to put our product out to the world. Now I must do all I can to put MEAC sports at the forefront of all NCAA Division l conferences."

Jones and Jennings replace Rod Wyatt and Bradford Evans, respectively. Wyatt left to join the staff at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Evans left to lead the media relations staff of the Asheville (NC) franchise of the National Basketball Development League.
