Hampton's Tommy Adams and Steve Merfeld Cop MEAC HonorsFebruary 26, 2002GREENSBORO, NC - Hampton University guard Tommy Adams has been voted the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year and heads the 2001-02 All-Conference Team. Joining him on the first team are guard Kyle Williams of Howard University, forward Bruce Jenkins of North Carolina A&T, forward Richard Toussaint of Bethune-Cookman College and forward Andre Matthews of Delaware State University. The voters included the 11 men's head basketball coaches and the 11 sports information directors. Adams, a 6-foot-3 senior guard from Woodbridge, VA has led the Pirates to an impressive, currently 22-5, record and averages 19 points a game. At the time of this release, Hampton is on a 14-game win streak that has them tied for the longest current streak in the nation. Out of a possible 22 first place votes, Adams was selected on 14 ballots for Player of the Year. Jenkins, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Silver Spring, MD, averages 18.9 points and 12 rebounds, which ranks him second in the nation. Jenkins also has a nation-leading 22 double-doubles this season. Jenkins was selected as the pre-season player of the year and appeared on six ballots as a first selection. Toussaint, a 6-foot-3 junior forward from Tampa, FL, leads the MEAC in scoring with an average of 21.2 points per game. In the Wildcats game vs. South Alabama, Toussaint scored 46 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field, while connecting on 28 out of 32 free throw opportunities. He received the final two first choice votes. Williams, a 6-foot-6 junior guard from Burlington, NJ is averaging 19.7 points per game in his first season with the Bison. In a Bison win over Coppin State this season, Williams scored a season-high 43 points in that game. Matthews, a 6-foot-5 forward from Seaford, DE is averaging 13.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting at a clip of 53 percent from the field. 2001-02 MEAC Men's All-Conference Team
