Howard's Andrea Gardner Leads MEAC All-Conference Team

GREENSBORO, NC - Andrea Gardner of Howard University was voted as the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and heads the 2001-02
All-Conference Basketball Team. Voters included MEAC women's head coaches and
sports information directors.
Gardner, a 6-foot-3 senior center from Washington, DC; leads the MEAC in
rebounding with 11.4 per game and she averages 15.8 points per game. Gardner
was selected as last year's MEAC player of the year and a member of the first
team. She has been instrumental in Howard's current record of 15-1 in the
MEAC. Gardner was selected on nine ballots (out of 19) as the first choice
and eight ballots as a second choice for player of the year. Guard, LaShondra
Dixon of Hampton University finished second in the voting. She also received
nine first choice votes, however, she only received four second choice votes.
Forward, Suawana Taylor of Norfolk State received the final two first choice
votes (there were nine head coaches to vote and 11 SID's).
Dixon and Taylor joined Gardner on the All-MEAC first team along with guard,
Nicole Rhem of South Carolina State University and forward, Lauren Forsthoff
of Bethune-Cookman College. Rhem, who averages 13 points, 5.8 rebounds and
3.2 steals per game was selected to the second team last year. While Taylor,
who was also selected to the second team last year, averages 16.6 points and
8.2 rebounds per game, Dixon leads the MEAC in scoring with an average of
18.1 points per game. Forsthoff averages 12.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per
game for the Lady Wildcats.
