Anthony Jones Named Head Football Coach at Alabama A&MJanuary 24, 2002During a press conference held Thursday morning (January 24) on the campus of Alabama A&M University, athletic director James A. Martin, Sr. named Anthony Jones as the new head football coach for the Bulldogs. Jones is replacing Ron Cooper, who stepped down three weeks ago to pursue other career options.
Anthony A. Jones has just completed his third season as the head coach at Morehouse College, where he led the Tigers to their first back-to-back eight-win season since the 1950s. After going 2-8 in 1999, his first season, Jones led the Tigers to an eight win season, which qualified him and the Tigers for the second most improved team in Division II. Jones was promoted to the position after serving one season as the offensive and recruiting coordinator for the Tigers in 1998. The previous season, Jones held a similar position at the South Carolina State. Jones is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. Jones played college football for Wichita State, where he earned several honors as a tight end. Jones received the Ben Hustle Award (1981). He also was named to the All-Missouri Valley Team (1983). Following his senior season with the Shockers, Jones went on to play for the Washington Redskins in 1984, where he was a member of the 1987 Super Bowl Championship team. After his three-year stint with the Redskins, Jones spent the next year with the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys. In 1991, after a five-year NFL career, Jones joined the staff at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland, where he served as the receivers/tight ends coach. Jones moved to South Carolina State University in 1992, where he worked as the offensive coordinator until his departure in 1998. While with the Bulldogs, Jones coached the quarterbacks, tight ends, and receivers. In 1998, Jones left South Carolina State and moved south to Morehouse College, where he was appointed the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. In additions to his coordinator duties, Jones also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Tigers.
