Southern Announces New Football Offensive Coordinator

January 9, 2002

BATON-ROUGE, LA -- Head Football Coach, Pete Richardson, has announced the hiring of David Oliver, as the Southern Jaguars new offensive coordinator.

Oliver just finished his fifth year on the coaching staff of the Tulane Green Wave, before accepting the offensive coordinator position at Southern. Oliver was the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Tulane, and one of the longest tenured coaches on Chris Scelfo's staff.

Oliver, 31, will begin his 10th year of coaching and has experience at nearly every level of the game. Prior to arriving at Tulane, he coached at Division I-AA Southeast Missouri State for one season, while earning his master's degree in educational administration in July 1997.

"David is going to be a real plus for our staff," says Richardson. "He brings a wealth of experience into our program. Coach Oliver played an instrumental role in the installment and running of the offensive scheme at Tulane, and I think he will do an excellent job for us at Southern."

Previously, Oliver spent time at the Division II level at the University of Northern Colorado for two seasons. At Northern Colorado, he tutored a pair of All-Americans who went on to enjoy NFL careers: OT Tony Ramirez (Detroit Lions) and TE Andy Haase (NY Giants).

Oliver also spent one year at the high school level. Oliver received his bachelor''s degree in 1994 from Northern Colorado.

He lettered four years as an offensive tackle and was an All-American and an All-Conference selection. He was twice invited to training camp with the Seattle Seahawks. A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a member of the AFCA. Oliver is married to the former Angelique Lowther of Albuquerque, N.M., and they welcomed their first child last summer.

Oliver replaces Mark Orlando who left to become offensive coodrinator at Texas Southern.
