Alcorn State Opts Out of Cal Poly State Football Game
University Adds Southern University to Schedule
June 20, 2002
ALCORN STATE, Miss. Due to ongoing budget cuts, Alcorn State University
was faced with the tough decision to "stream-line" its 2002 athletic
budget by opting out of the November 2nd game with Cal Poly State.
"While we regret the inconvenience it has caused to both schools,
the trip to San Luis Obispo, California is just not economically feasible
at this time," state Alcorn State's director of athletics Robert Raines.
"Fortunately, Southern University which is less than 120 miles away,
stepped in and offered to pick us up for their twelfth game."
The team will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to renew their rivalry
at A.W. Mumford Stadium on November 2, 2002. "We are hoping that with
the realignment of conference football schedules, this will keep the long
standing rivalry in tact," stated Raines.
