Hampton, Va - Hampton University's Director of Athletics, Dr. Dennis
E. Thomas has been recognized as Southeast Region Division I-AA/I-AAA Athletics
Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors
of Athletics (NACDA). Thomas was one of 25 honorees recognized at NCADA's
37th Annual Convention in Dallas, Texas. They received their awards during
the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on June 17.
"It is always an honor and pleasure to be recognized by your peers,"
remarked Thomas. "An award of this nature is not earned alone, I must
give credit to a great group of coaches, student-athletes and support staff.
Even though it recognizes the individual, it is an athletic department award."
Under Thomas' leadership, the Hampton Department of Athletics was selected
as the "Winningest Division I Program in the Commonwealth of Virginia"
by the Virginia Sports Information Director's Association. Hampton won the
designation for two consecutive years (2000 & 2001). The Lady Pirates'
program was recognized as the best women's program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference symbolized by the Mary McLeod Bethune All-Sports Trophy for the
2001-02 athletic season.
