Savannah State football coach Bill Davis passesMarch 18, 2002Savannah State University head football coach William R. "Bill" Davis died this weekend at his residence. He was 60. Davis was in his second stint at Savannah State having returned to the southeast Georgia institution in March, 2000. He had been SSU head football coach from 1986 to 1992 where he led the Tigers to their first ever NCAA Playoff appearance in 1992. He left the following year to take the head coaching job at Tennessee State. Davis also coached at South Carolina State and, his alma mater, Johnson C. Smith. In eight years as SSU football mentor, the Union, SC native compiled a record of 53-39. Funeral arangements are pending.
