WSSU Hires Defensive CoordinatorMay 17, 2002
Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem State University football coach Kermit Blount has announced that Gregory Richardson will join the Ram coaching staff. A 1974 graduate of North Carolina Central, Richardson will serve as the defensive coordinator, replacing the departed Andrew Faison who accepted the head coaching position at Virginia State University. Richardson brings an abundance of experience to the Ram defense, with most coming within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) where he has coached at five different institutions. "I'm very excited to be here at Winston-Salem State University," said the 50-year old Richardson. "This is the first time I've had the opportunity to join a program that wasn't in the process of rebuilding. Winston-Salem State is a proven winner and one of the elite programs in the conference. I'm just looking forward to working with Coach Blount and the staff so that we may return to the championship game." A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Richardson spent the 1999-2001
seasons as the head coach at Livingstone College where he compiled a 7-23
mark. Prior to that he served as the defensive coordinator at Virginia
Union University (1997-99) and Livingstone (1994-96). While at Virginia
Union Richardson guided a Panther defense that finished the 1998 season
atop the league and among the top 10 in Division II in scoring and total
defense. In addition, his 1995 Blue Bear defense ranked third in the country
in rushing defense, while his 1996 squad led the nation against the run.
Richardson has also served stints at the University of Buffalo, North
Carolina Central, Norfolk State and Johnson C. Smith.
