Hampton's Thomas named Chairman of NCAA I-AA Football Committee

Dr. Dennis E. Thomas has been named Chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I-AA Football Committee. The NCAA I-AA Football Committee is responsible for overseeing the Division I-AA Football Championships.

Currently Dr. Thomas is the Director of Athletics of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where under his leadership the Pirates' men's basketball team gained national attention when they defeated the Cyclones of Iowa State University, 58-57, in the 2001 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Department of Athletics was also selected for the second consecutive year (2000, 2001) as the "Winningest Division I program in the state of Virginia" by the Virginia Sports Information Director's Association (VASIDA).

Dr. Thomas, entering his 12th year with the Pirates, also serves on the NCAA Football Issues Committee, a Board of Directors member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Committee member of the Division I-AA Honors Court Committee, which selects Hall of Fame members from Division I-AA football institutions, Chairman of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament Committee, Chairman of the MEAC Championship Administration Committee, Board member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, Executive Committee member and Treasurer of the Division I-AA Director of Athletics Association.
