Virginia Union Campus Ruled Safe For PlaySeptember 17, 2001Winston-Salem, NC - After days of speculation regarding an alleged outbreak of meningitis, Virginia health officials have issued a statment indicating that Virginia Union University is free to resume everyday activities. This clears the way for this weekend's football game between VUU and Winston-Salem State. The Virginia Department of Health's Office of Epidemiology which establishes and implements disease control policies issued the statement. "The university mounted a campaign last week making the antibiotic available to all students, faculty and staff," said Dr. C. Diane Woolard, Director of the Division of Surveillance & Investigation for the Department of Health. "The antibiotic will kill the bacteria that causes meningitis and in fact, because of this campaign, Virginia Union students are less likely to carry the bacteria than are students from other universities. Therefore, there is no reason to alter any activities involving VUU students." The Panthers will take on WSSU in a rematch of last season's CIAA Championship this Saturday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Hovey Field in Richmond, Virginia.
