Orlando, FL – The Hampton University men and women’s
tennis teams won the 2003 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)
Tennis Championships, defeating the men and women’s teams
of Florida A&M at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando,
Fl. This was a repeat for both teams as they won the title
last year. Both have advanced to the NCAA Division I National
Tennis Tournament as an automatic qualifier representing the
MEAC.
In men’s competition, Hampton won the doubles point
and held off Florida A&M for a 4-2 win. This was their
third consecutive title and seventh in the last eight years.
Hampton’s Glauco Nascimento of Brazil was named the tournament
Outstanding Performer.
Led by junior Alena Mitackova (Czech, Republic), who was named
the Outstanding Performer, the Lady Pirates won over Florida
A&M 4-0. This was their fourth title in the last eight
years.
In the men’s third place consolation match, that was
resumed after yesterday’s rain delay, 4th seeded South
Carolina State surprised 3rd seeded Norfolk State 4-3.
