CAU Lady Panthers Claim Second Consecutive Tennis Title While FVSU Wildcats Halt Maroon Tigers Win Streak

April 21, 2003

The 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women and Men Tennis Championships were held April 18th and 19th at Morehouse College.

In the women’s division, the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University were the defending conference champs and entered the tournament ranked number one. After a first round bye, the Lady Panthers began tournament play by meeting the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. After the playing the minimum of five matches (three doubles and two singles) the Lady Panthers won the match 5-0 and advanced to the championship match for the third consecutive year.

The championship match up featured the same two teams who had met in the two previous SIAC women’s finals; the Lady Panthers and the Tigerettes of Tuskegee University. In the final, the Lady Panthers had little difficulty in claiming their second consecutive SIAC crown. Again, the Lady Panthers played the minimum number of matches in a 5-0 over Tuskegee. With the win, the Lady Panthers were crowned SIAC Champs for the second time in three years and they now advance to NCAA regional play.

In the men’s division, history was made when the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University upset the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College in the championship match. For 25 of the last 27 years, the Maroon Tigers had been crowned SIAC Men’s Tennis Champs. The win by the Wildcats was their first conference title under Head Coach Willie Foster. The 5-4 win by the Wildcats also propels them into their first NCAA regional appearance.
