Tuskegee, AL – The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers, defending SIAC champions, will put their 2002 conference title on the line when they open the 2003 season on Sunday, Aug. 31 against SIAC foe Miles College at the 80,000-seat Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.
Hampton University is the only new opponent on the 11-game schedule. The NCAA 1AA Pirates completed the 2002 season at 7-5, finishing second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Tuskegee and Hampton last met in 1993 in Hampton, Va., and 1992 in Tuskegee, Ala.
There are four classics, four home games and eight SIAC conference games on the Golden Tigers’ 2003 schedule, three of them at home in Cleve Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium.
After opening against Miles on Aug. 31, the Golden Tigers will then visit Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., on Sept. 6, return home for their Abbott Stadium debut on Sept.13 against Lincoln University (Mo.) and will close out the month against the Pirates of Hampton University on Sept. 20 in the River Front Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio, at Paul Brown Stadium, home of the NFL Cincinnati Bengals.
After two successive open dates, Tuskegee will travel to Albany, Ga., to face Albany State on Oct. 11, meets Morehouse in the 68th Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic at McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga., on Oct. 18, hosts Fort Valley State at Abbott Stadium on Oct. 25, treks to Jackson, Tenn., to tangle with Lane College on Nov. 1, entertains Clark Atlanta for Homecoming on Nov. 8 and faces Kentucky State at Abbott Stadium on Nov. 15.
The Golden Tigers will end the 2003 regular-season opposing 1AA Alabama State in the 80th Annual Turkey Day Football Classic at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
The Golden Tigers completed the 2002 season at 10-1 (7-1 SIAC), winning their third consecutive conference title.
The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers are the nation’s winningest Historically Black College football team with 554 victories, including 7 National Black College Championships, 21 SIAC Championships, and 15 postseason Bowl appearances.
