Fayetteville
State Names Sam Hanger Interim Basketball Coach
August 14, 2002
Fayetteville State University has appointed Sam Hanger as interim
men's head basketball coach. He replaces Michael Bernard, who
is being relieved of his duties.
Hanger has been associate head men's basketball coach since
1998 after he and Bernard both interviewed for the position.
"Coach Hanger has done an outstanding job as Bernard’s
assistant," said FSU Director of Athletics William Carver.
" We are going to put this incident behind us and continue
building our athletic programs. Sam will continue with the department’s
overall goal and keep the program going in the direction we want
it to go."
Prior to coming to FSU, Hanger was head coach at Winston-Salem
State University from 1995 until 1998 compiling a 36-45 overall
record. Before that he was head coach at Greensboro College from
1990-1995.
Hanger has been an assistant coach at Amherst College, American
International College, University of Massachusetts and Saint John’s
University and was head coach at Greenfield Community College
from 1981-83. His overall coaching record is 117-101.
Hanger has just returned to campus after attending the NCAA‘s
Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority for Males in Indianapolis.
