Howard
University Announces New Head Coaches

Howard University has announced several appointments to its athletics
staff.
Keith J. Comeforo has been named the strength
and conditioning coach for Howard University. Comeforo, who holds
the distinction of being the first to ever serve in this capacity
at the University, comes to Howard from Towson University where
he served as director of strength and conditioning the past two
years.
"We felt that this was a key position that we needed
to have filled in athletics," said Sondra Norrell-Thomas,
director of athletics. "This is crucial to our program if
we are to stay competitive. Keith has had a wide range of valuable
experiences that makes him the right fit for our needs. He will
work with all 19 sports here at the University."
Comeforo has served in similar capacities at the University
of Kentucky, Princeton University, the University of Arizona and
Oregon State University.
Comeforo played wide receiver at Oregon State University from
1997-00 and received his bachelor of science degree in exercise
and sport science.
In other personnel moves, Etienne Thomas has
been named the assistant director of compliance for athletics.
Thomas comes to Howard from St. Paul's College where she served
as compliance coordinator and senior women's administrator. She
also served as assistant compliance coordinator at North Carolina
Central University.
Thomas received her BA in political science from North Carolina
Central in 1996 and her law degree from the University of Iowa
this past May.
Tonja Braxton has been named the new head
women's softball coach. Braxton served as head softball coach
at Bowie State from 1993 until last season and compiled an impressive
126-82 won loss record while being selected coach of the year
three times.
Braxton received her BA degree in political science from Bowie
State in 1993 and her MA degree in business management, also from
Bowie State in 1995.
Melinda Vaughn has been named the new women's
lacrosse coach. Vaughn served as assistant and later interim head
coach for the Lady Bison team last year.
Vaughn served as head coach of the George Washington University
women's club lacrosse team during the 1999-00 season.
She also served as assistant girls lacrosse coach at Wilton
High School in Wilton, CT during the spring of 1999.
JoVanka J. Lewis has been named assistant
women's basketball coach. Lewis comes to Howard from Alabama A&M
University where she served in a similar capacity. She also served
as an assistant coach at Virginia State University.
Lewis played collegiately at Hampton University where she was
a four-year letterman.
She received her BS degree in athletic administration and sports
management.
