Seven HBCU performers have been selected to participate in the
2003 Whataburger Cactus Bowl. The contest will be held January
10 in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's Javelina Stadium.
The game features the 82 best players in Division II football with a West All-Star team against a squad from the East.
The event has attracted a number of professional scouts each
year and this year should be no exception. Twenty-two of the
players who participated in the Whataburger Cactus Bowl All-Star
game here in January have been drafted or signed as free agents
by National Football League teams. Players drafted were Keyon
Nash of Albany State (Oakland Raiders)
in round 6 number 189 and Peter Campion of North Dakota State
(Carolina Panthers) in round 7 number 213.
In addition to Nash, other Black College alumni of the game
include James Atkins of Virginia Union,
(Miami Dolphins); Stephon Kelly of Winston-Salem
State, (Cincinnati Bengals); and Robert Mackey
of Winston-Salem State, (Houston Texans).
The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net Southwest and can also be seen on Direct TV Channel 643 or Dish Network Channel 416.
Television coverage will begin at 6:00pm (Central Time) on Friday January 10 with kickoff scheduled for 6:30.
