(GREENSBORO, N.C) - George Small, an assistant head
coach and co-defensive coordinator for Hampton University, has
been named the new head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University. The announcement was made at
a press conference today.
Small coached at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival
Hampton University last season. His responsibilities included
developing the defensive line and daily assistance with defensive
game planning as well as assigned assistant administrative duties.
"We are very excited about George Small assuming the
head coaching position," said Dr. James C. Renick, A&T
Chancellor. "His experiences as a professional athlete
and coach will be a great asset to A&T's football program."
Prior to Hampton University, Small worked at Youngstown State
University under Jim Tressel as a defensive line coach from
2001 to 2002. His duties were to provide motivation, leadership,
academic monitoring and guidance to young men that attended
Youngstown State University.
From 1995 to 2000, Small was the head coach at Division II
Kentucky State University and was named 100% Wrong Club Coach
of the Year in 1997. He led the Thorobreds to the school’s
first winning season in 20 years and won the first Pioneer Bowl
in 1995. During his tenure he was twice named Southern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. In 1995, Kentucky State
led the NCAA in total defense and in 1997 led the Division II
ranks in Passing Efficiency Defense. A total of four players
under Small’s tutelage were drafted into the National
Football League and several others joined the NFL Europe and
Canadian Football Leagues.
Small’s coaching experience includes stints at Grambling
State University, Florida A&M University, University of
Tulsa, Savannah State University, and Langston University.
A former defensive lineman and captain at N.C. A&T, Small
was named All-MEAC in 1979 and was also selected as a Pittsburgh
Courier All-American and North Carolina All-State in the same
season. A National Dean’s List Honoree, he was selected
as a part of Who’s Who Among Outstanding Names and Faces
in 1979.
Following his collegiate career at A&T, Small played a
total of six seasons in the professional ranks including five
in the National Football League.
Small is a member of several professional organizations including
the American Football Coaches Association, Association of Black
Collegiate Football Coaches, National Football League Players
Association, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
