Appearing at three of the four regional championships on Saturday, 17
Black College performers advanced to the NCAA Division I Track
and Field Championships on June 11-17 in Sacramento, California.
The top five finishers in each regional event advanced.
The largest group to move on came from the East Regional held
at George Mason University. Hampton University’s
Jerome Mathis won the 200m dash with a time of 20.58
seconds.
Florida A&M’s Sheldon Morant finished second in
the men’s 100m dash clocking 10.38 seconds. Morant then
joined James Amune, Brent Mobley and Antwanare
Jones to finish
second in the 4X100m men’s relay.
Howard University’s David Oliver grabbed
third place in the men’s 110m hurdles.
In field events, Desmond Kapofu (2nd) of Norfolk
State and
N.C. A&T’s Everett Bruce (5th) advanced
in the triple jump competition. South Carolina State’s
Darryl Reeves got a west coast trip by virtue of
a third place finish in
the long jump.
S.C. State's Trina Lovett, Delaware State’s
Tiffany Barnes and Hampton’s
Chloe Davis were the
only women from HBCUs to advance from the East Regional Championship.
Lovett finished third in the high jump. Barnes
finished
fifth
in the
400m dash and Davis
earned a return trip to the finals by finishing fifth in the
400m
hurdles.
Alabama State’s 4X100 men’s relay team of Gregory
Tomas, Rynelle Joseph, Jeremy
Bateman and Curtis Thompson finished
fifth in the Mideast Regional Championship at Ohio State University.
In the Midwest Regional Championship, Texas Southern’s
Tremedia Brice finished fifth in the women’s 200m dash
to earn a trip to the finals which will be held at Hornet Stadium
on the campus of California State University in Sacramento.
