Simmons Named Allen University Head Football Coach

COLUMBIA–Sherman R. Simmons, assistant head football
coach for the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, has been selected
to become the new Allen University head football coach. The
announcement was made by Yellow Jackets Athletics
Director J. Ronald Sims in a 3 p.m.
press conference.
For the past four seasons, Simmons served as assistant head
football coach, defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator
for the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College (Atlanta, Ga.).
He has also served as an assistant football coach and recruiting
coordinator for the Aggies of N.C. A&T State University
(Greensboro) and the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University
(Charlotte, N.C.); assistant football coach (defensive backs/professional
relations/recruiting) for the Jaguars of Southern University
and A&M College (Baton Rouge, La.); and assistant football
coach and recruiter for the Demons of Northwestern State University
of Louisiana (Natchitoches).
In addition, Simmons has participated in summer internship
programs for college coaches with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons
and Seattle Seahawks. He has also created and directed tutorial
programs for student-athletes and served as an instructor for
classes in the education departments for a few of the institutions
that he has coached.
Simmons holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Winston-Salem
State University and a master’s degree in student personnel
services from Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
The Fighting Yellow Jackets football program – which
had been discontinued following the 1968 season – reemerged
at Allen University in 2001. The team will enter the 2003 season
with a 6-8 overall record (5-1, 1-7). The Yellow Jackets Athletic
Program is governed by the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (EIAC) of the National Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (NAIA).
