Black College All-Star Basketball Classic Cancelled
March 20, 2003
Baltimore, MD – Target Sports Marketing announced today
that it has officially cancelled the 2003 Black College All-Star
Basketball Classic (BCABC). The Event will be re-scheduled in
the spring of 2004. In the wake of the nation’s international
conflict, which poses uncertain travel challenges, the decision
was made to cancel the 2003 event.
“We are committed to the future of the Black College All-Star
Basketball Classic and we look forward to a stellar event in
2004,” said the event’s executive producer, LaShun
Lawson. The corporate sponsors, Anheuser Busch, Visionary Marketing
Group, MBC and Gatorade have pledged their support for 2004.
Established in 1996 the Classic showcases the talent of Division
I and Division II graduating athletes from Historically Black
Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) before professional basketball
scouts and a national television viewing audience. Participants
in the game are competing seniors in one of the four HBCU conferences:
MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), CIAA (Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association) SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference)
and SIAC (South Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Also included
are athletes from independent HBCU’s.
The Association of Black College Sports Information Directors,
along with the NBA Scouting Office, select the athletes based
on overall performance as an individual and team player, during
the participant’s college basketball career. The BCABC
is the only HBCU sporting event of its kind that brings together
basketball talent representing over 30 different schools. For
