Bethune-Cookman's
Lauren McCoy Tosses a Perfect Game
March 30, 2003
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Lauren McCoy had a perfect game and
the Bethune-Cookman College softball team had a near-perfect
day Saturday as the Lady Wildcats swept Florida A&M 3-0
and 8-1 to remain unbeaten in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
play.
Lauren McCoy
McCoy, a sophomore from Corona, Calif., fired the second perfect
game in school history (Miranda Mayse had one last year against
Morris Brown) in the opener. She struck out seven as she improved
to 15-7.
"It was one of my goals this season to get a perfect
game, but I didn't think I could get it against Florida A&M," McCoy
said. "My defense was on fire and they kept pumping me
up. This is sweet because it's a team victory."
Head coach Laura Watten was impressed with McCoy's mental
approach.
"She has a great head on the mound,'' Watten said. "She
has the pitcher's mentality."
Lamia Scott added to the first game's accomplishment with
a rare steal of home for the Wildcats' first run. Tiffany Bowser
singled home Amber Jackson for B-CC's second run in the first
inning.
Jackson added an insurance run in the sixth when she doubled
and scored on a wild pitch.
In the nightcap, Krista Schille's two-run single with two
outs in the second gave B-CC all the runs its would need.
Florida A&M had the bases loaded with no outs in the fourth,
but Scott caught a flyball in centerfield and threw to Bowser
at second base for the double play. Bowser then went home to
try to get Raven Rushton at the plate, but the throw for the
triple play was a second late.
B-CC added to its 4-1 lead in the fifth with four runs, two
on a Megan McGuire triple.
The Lady Wildcats improved to 31-14 overall and 10-0 in MEAC
play.
"It was a good day," Watten said. "It's good
to be playing the way we are. We really seemed focused."
B-CC goes on the road for April, beginning Friday at Norfolk
State.
