MEAC Tournament Pairings Released
S.C. State wins regular season men's title; Hampton takes women's crown

MEN

Richmond, VA – S. C. State University defeated N.C. A&T 77-74 in Greensboro, closing out a banner season as the 2002-03 regular season champions. The Bulldogs will enter the 2003 MEAC Tournament as the number one seed, while two time defending champion Hampton University was upset by rival Norfolk State 48-44, dropping the Pirates to the 3rd seed of the upcoming tournament. The Hornets of Delaware State are the 2nd seed, because of their regular season win over Hampton U. (71-66/OT).

The regular season battle for position in the upcoming tournament went down to the final weekend and the following is a closer look at the MEAC tie-breaking system.

1. S.C. State won over N.C. A&T (77-74) and won the regular season title and will be the #1 seed in the tournament.

2. Norfolk State defeated Hampton U. (48-44), which moved Delaware State to the #2 seed because the Hornets defeated the Pirates in single game head-to-head game during the regular season.

3. Hampton U. is now the #3 seed. Both Hampton and Delaware State finished the regular season with a 13-5 conference mark, but Delaware State won in their only match-up of the season.

4. Coppin State and Florida A&M finished with a 11-7 conference mark, but Coppin St. is the 4th seed, because of the point spread tie breaker system. (@FAMU 69, Coppin St. 74 – OT/5pts) AND (FAMU 73, @ Coppin State 69 – OT/4pts).

5. Bethune Cookman is tied with Maryland Eastern Shore with a 5-13 conference mark and BCC will be the #9 seed because of the point spread. (UMES 74, @ BCC 69/5pts) and (@UMES 48, BCC 57/9pts). UMES is the #10 seed.

Tournament seeding is set and all action will tip-off on Monday, March 10, 25 minutes after the MEAC Women’s first game at 11:00 am. The official tournament web site MEACHoops.com will have consistent updates of all game action through out the tournament with live game stats and the Major Cable Network will televise the semi-final round. The Men’s Championship game will be televised live by ESPN.

WOMEN

Hampton University secured their position as the #1 seed of the upcoming MEAC Tournament with a 73-53 win over arch-rival Norfolk State and a 17-2 regular season finish. The #2 seed is Delaware State with a 16-2 regular season record.

The seeding for the 2003 Tournament went down to the final weekend in other important position also.

1. Howard U. and Florida A&M are tied for the #3 position and based on the tie breaker system, Howard U. will be #3 and Florida A&M #4 (@FAMU 82, Howard U. 72/10pts) and (@Howard 92, FAMU 75/17pts).

2. Coppin State and Norfolk State finished with 7-11 conference marks. (@Norfolk State 62, Coppin State 60/2pts) and (@Coppin State 77, Norfolk State 61/16pts). Based on tie breaker system and the point spread, Coppin State is #7 and Norfolk State is #8.

3. S.C. State and N.C. A&T finished with 6-12 conference marks. (@S.C. State 78, NC A&T 57/21) and (@N.C. A&T 54, S.C. State 53/1pt.). Based on tie-breaker and point spread, S.C. State wins the higher seed.

Women's action will tip-off on Monday, March 10 at 11:00 am, with #8 Maryland Eastern Shore taking on #11 Morgan State. The official tournament web site MEACHoops.com will have consistent updates of all game action throughout the tournament with live game stats and the Major Cable Network (MBC) will televise the semi-final round and the Women’s Championship game.
