March 31, 2003
SALISBURY, NC -- North Carolina Central University senior pitcher
Jennifer Jones threw a perfect game en route to a 9-0 victory in the
first contest of a CIAA doubleheader versus Livingstone College at
Kelsey-Scott Park in Salisbury, NC on Friday (March 28).
Jones, a transfer from North Carolina A&T out of Louisburg, NC,
struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced for her second no-hit effort
of the season.
Two freshmen, Candace Spruill (Raleigh, NC) and Jameka Little
(Kinston, NC), topped NCCU's offensive attack. Spruill belted a solo
home run in the top of the fourth inning and drove in another run in the
fifth, while Little cleared the bases in the fifth with a triple to left
field. Lady Eagle sophomore Aki Dawson (Kinston, NC) hit 2-for-2 with
two RBI in game one.
In the second game, Jones held the Lady Blue Bears hitless through
six innings, but Livingstone's Sherlin Jean singled to right field in
the bottom of the seventh to end the no-hit bid. Jones also contributed
at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple, two home runs, four RBI and
four runs scored. NCCU completed the doubleheader sweep with a 14-1 win.
