Comes From Behind to Win Div I Title at NMCG
Championship
Johnson & Wales University takes Div II Title
May 4, 2003
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman College of Daytona Beach, Fla., behind the stellar play of junior Luke Miller of England and senior James Douris of Australia, regained the led over Florida A&M University of Tallahassee, Fla., to win the Div. I team competition with a team total of 844 in the 2003 National Minority College Golf Championship at the PGA Golf Club (North Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Wildcats took the lead in the final round when Miller posted a tournament record 8-under-par 64 and Douris came in with a 6-under-par 66. This is Bethune-Cookman's third title at the National Minority College Golf Championship in last five years.
"At the turn, my coach (Dr. Gary Freeman) said it was good I was 2-under, but then he told me Jamie (Douris) was beating me by three strokes. We have an unwritten rivalry, so all I knew was that I had to beat Jamie. I went birdie, par, birdie, eagle, par and birdie to get to 7-under-par and then I birdie the last hole," said Miller, who finished tied for second in the Div. I individual standings. "It really came down to Jamie pulling me along in front and I knew we had to shoot low to have a chance to win."
Senior Jay Sandhu of Florida A&M University finished with a 5-under-par 67 to earn medalist honors in the Div. I individual standings with a Championship-total of 10-under-par 206.
"The competition was excellent and with this being my last tournament and
I get to win it, there is no better feeling," said Sandhu, who is from Nairobi, Kenya.
Though the University of Texas-Pan American, the defending Div. I Champions, finished in fourth place, freshman Craig Berger of Alberta, Canada, scored a hole-in-one on No. 7, hitting an 8-iron 154 yards on the par-3.
Johnson & Wales University of North Miami, Fla., captured the Div. II title by 38 strokes with a team total of 853. The Wildcats were led by sophomore Michael Welch of Quincy, Mass., who shot a final round of 2-under-par 70. Welch captured medalist honors in the Div. II individual standings with a Championship total of 9-under-par 207.
The Lady Broncs of the University of Texas-Pan American and the Ladycats of Bethune-Cookman College came into the final round tied at 649. Texas-Pan American pulled off the victory in the women's division with a three-day total of 962. Freshman Stefanie Maynard of Pflugerville, Texas who shot a final round of 3-over-par 75 led the Lady Broncs and was the overall medalist with a total score of 11-over-par 227.
"My putting came together so my round improved and I finished strong with eight straight pars," said Maynard, who already this season captured The Bronc Intercollegiate Classic title. "I am proud of our team because we stuck together and finished winners."
Freshman Ashley Davis of Tennessee State University held on to her lead for the third day to capture the Women's Independent Division with three-day total of 13-over-par 229. In the Men's Independent Division, Doyle Phillip of Bethune-Cookman College also maintained his three-day lead to win medalist honors with a Championship total of 7-over-par 223.
More than 100 contestants from 22 colleges and universities comprised the field for the 17th National Minority College Golf Championship. The Championship concluded after the third round on Sunday, May 4. The National Minority College Golf Championship is co-sponsored by The PGA of America and the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund of Cleveland, Ohio.
