“We’re all very excited and looking forward to
the leadership that Charles Davis will provide for intercollegiate
athletics,” Renick said.
“We are fortunate to bring aboard someone with such outstanding
credentials,” adds Dr. Roselle Wilson, interim athletics
director and assistant vice chancellor for student affairs.
“Charles brings a wealth of experience in college athletics
and I’m confident he will take our athletics program to
the next level.”
Davis comes to N.C. A&T from Bowie State University (Bowie,
MD) where he had served as the athletics director since August
2000. While at BSU, the athletics department demonstrated continued
growth in sports across the board. He instituted new and progressive
programs within the department such as the annual Academic Excellence
Banquet, which honors student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or better
in the classroom. He also initiated a Millennium Fund, which
raises money to support athletic scholarships.
Prior to Bowie State, Davis spent 11 years as part of the Wake
Forest University athletic administration. He joined the staff
in 1989 as a sports marketer and account executive. In 1991,
he became director of community programs and developed ACT (Athletes
Care Team), which received the 1996 Award of Excellence for
Community Programs by Athletic Management Magazine.
While at Wake Forest he also designed, developed, and implemented
“Charlie’s Kids,” a program which increased
football revenue and ticket sales while allowing nearly 2,000
youth per season attend Wake Forest football games and other
athletic events. In 1995, he was named the assistant athletic
director at WFU and was responsible for preparing student-athletes
for life after athletics by advising them on various matters,
including career choices, internships, summer jobs, classes,
and personal matters.
A 1971 graduate of Wake Forest University, Davis received a
Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master’s Degree in Liberal
Studies from WFU in 1997. Davis also spent four years as a standout
basketball player for the Demon Deacons. He was an All-ACC first
team selection for three consecutive years and in 1971 became
the first African-American to be named the ACC Player of the
Year.
Davis finished his career as a Demon Deacon with 1,970 points,
averaging 24.9 points per game, still the best in Wake Forest
history. Against American University, he scored 51 points, which
also stands as the highest single game output in school history.
Furthermore, Davis currently holds the ACC career free throw
percentage record of 87.3 percent. For his efforts, Wake Forest
inducted Davis into the Hall of Fame in 1984 while retiring
his #12 jersey. He was also recently named to the ACC 50th Anniversary
Men’s Basketball Team.
Davis and his wife of 31 years, Linda, are the proud parents
of two daughters, Sharrika DeVae and Sydney Rea.
