Appoints Doug Wright as New Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach

PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s
Department of Athletics, has appointed Mr. Doug Wright of Salisbury,
MD as the new men’s and women’s head tennis coach.
In 1990 Wright accepted the position as Director of Tennis at
Layton’s Salisbury Sports Club, founded The Eastern Shore
Tennis Academy, and his program has developed more junior players
to the varsity high school and collegiate level than any program
on Delmarva. Wright also serves as the Head Tennis Professional
at Green Hill Yacht and Country Club and the Co-Director for the
NIKE Tennis Camp at Salisbury University.
Doug Wright brings to UMES a gamut of coaching experience and
personal tennis playing accomplishments. Since 1979, the start
of Mr. Wright’s career, tennis programs under his supervision
have produced eleven nationally ranked USTA juniors, USTA MD #1
ranked players, USTA MD State Outdoor Champions, and NCAA Scholarship
and MVP players. He has also coached several members of the Seaford
High School Championship Tennis teams in Seaford, DE.
Wright, who is a 1981 graduate of St. Mary’s College
of Maryland, with a BA in English has been named MVP for Tennis
and Fencing at St. Mary’s College. His tournament titles
include, USPTA/Middle States Championship Finalist, Middle States
Professional Indoor Doubles Finalist, Eastern Shore Vets Doubles
Champion, CF/Pro Am Pittsburgh Champion, and a four year LSSC
Holiday Tournament Men’s Doubles Champion.
The United States Professional Tennis Association certifies
Doug Wright as a Professional One. He was also selected as the
Head Coach for the USTA Area Training Center/Pittsburgh in the
first year for his player development program nationwide.
Dr. Vivian Fuller, the Director of Athletics for UMES is delighted
and enthused to bring aboard Doug Wright, and is optimistic that
he will bring a positive turnaround to UMES’ men’s
and women’s tennis teams. “He will be a great fit
for the University. He knows the game and has proven he can teach
it. We are looking forward to him coming on board.”
