PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Department of Athletics, has appointed Mr. Doug Wright of Salisbury, MD as the new men’s and women’s head tennis coach.

In 1990 Wright accepted the position as Director of Tennis at Layton’s Salisbury Sports Club, founded The Eastern Shore Tennis Academy, and his program has developed more junior players to the varsity high school and collegiate level than any program on Delmarva. Doug Wright brings to UMES a gamut of coaching experience and personal tennis playing accomplishments. Since 1979, the start of Mr. Wright’s career, tennis programs under his supervision have produced eleven nationally ranked USTA juniors, USTA MD #1 ranked players, USTA MD State Outdoor Champions, and NCAA Scholarship and MVP players. He has also coached several members of the Seaford High School Championship Tennis teams in Seaford, DE.

Wright, who is a 1981 graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, with a BA in English has been named MVP for Tennis and Fencing at St. Mary’s College. His tournament titles include, USPTA/Middle States Championship Finalist, Middle States Professional Indoor Doubles Finalist, Eastern Shore Vets Doubles Champion, CF/Pro Am Pittsburgh Champion, and a four year LSSC Holiday Tournament Men’s Doubles Champion.

The United States Professional Tennis Association certifies Doug Wright as a Professional One. He was also selected as the Head Coach for the USTA Area Training Center/Pittsburgh in the first year for his player development program nationwide.

Dr. Vivian Fuller, the Director of Athletics for UMES is delighted and enthused to bring aboard Doug Wright, and is optimistic that he will bring a positive turnaround to UMES’ men’s and women’s tennis teams. “He will be a great fit for the University. He knows the game and has proven he can teach it. We are looking forward to him coming on board.”
