Alabama State University has named Charles
Coe III as interim head football coach. Coe takes over for
L.C. Cole who was suspended, with pay, on Friday, August 1.
The suspension
resulted from an internal investigation which revealed several
violations of NCAA rules.

Assistant coaches Johnnie Cole and Robert Freeman were also suspended.
Coe was introduced by President Joe Lee at a press conference
on Monday.
Coe comes
to ASU from the University of Memphis where he had been an
assistant
coach since 1997. After working as a running backs coach for
three years at Memphis, he was promoted to assistant head coach
and receivers coach in 2000. Prior to joining the staff at
Memphis, he had stints at Pittsburg, Tennessee, Kansas State,
Missouri, Louisville, Ball State, Cincinnati and Iowa. He is
a 1973 graduate of Kansas State.
