Devin Green Withdraws Request For Release At Hampton University

August 20, 2003

Hampton, VA – Junior guard Devin Green has withdrawn his request for release from the Hampton University Basketball Team. Denied his initial release, Green had scheduled a hearing with the Student-Athlete Appeals Committee that was to take place this morning. However, upon arrival he informed the committee that the hearing would not be necessary due to his wish to continue his career at Hampton University.

The Pirates leading scorer last season at 14.9 points per game and the 2001-02 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, the 6-foot-7 Green stated that he reached his decision just hours before the hearing.

“I am a spiritual person and I let God guide my steps,” said Green. “I really prayed about the situation last night on the way to Hampton and God told me this is where I need to be. So I’m just going where my spirit takes me. Hopefully everyone will embrace me and welcome me back. I know it will be hard in the beginning, but coming back is something that needs to happen. Hampton is where I need to be.”

Second-year Pirate head coach Bobby Collins is looking forward to Green’s return to the program for many reasons.

“Devin is a quality young man and was a model citizen his first two years at Hampton. His return brings mutual benefit to him and the Hampton University Basketball program,” expresses Collins, who led the Pirates to a 19-11 mark a year ago -- the best record by any first-year Hampton head coach. “Outside of basketball we try to focus on helping players mature academically, professionally and spiritually, and I embrace the opportunity to assist Devin in improving every aspect of his life.”
