Albany State University Golden Rams announce 2004 football schedule

February 12, 2004

Albany State University (ASU) Athletics Director Dr. John I. Davis and Head Football Coach James "Mike" White have announced the 2004 Golden Rams football schedule.

Albany State's 10-game slate includes four home games at the all-new Albany Municipal Coliseum, a state-of-the-art football facility located on the Albany State campus, two football classics and one game against a team from a different conference, Davis said.

"We had a great season last year. We won the conference championship and the Pioneer Bowl, so we are looking forward to another exciting season this year," Davis said. "We will play action-packed football in a beautiful new facility and we want everyone to be a part of the excitement of Golden Rams football."

The Golden Rams, who are coming off a 10-2 season that ended with the 2003 SIAC championship crown and a blowout victory over the CIAA's Fayetteville State Broncos in the Pioneer Bowl, will play two back-to-back home games to kick off the 2004 season. The Rams start their new season against SIAC rival, the Miles College Golden Bears, on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. For the past six seasons, Albany State and Valdosta State have played in the season opener, but due to a scheduling shift mandated by the NCAA that requires teams to move games up one week, the teams will have to wait until week two of football action. The Rams will welcome their Gulf South Conference foe, the Valdosta State University Blazers, to Albany on Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. for the Blazers' season opener.

The Golden Rams will hit the road to Frankfort, KY to play the Kentucky State University Thorobreds in an SIAC match-up on Sept. 11, and return home on Sept. 18 to play the Lane College Dragons at 7 p.m. The Rams will travel to Tuskegee, AL to play the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on Oct. 2, before meeting the Savannah State University Tigers in the Seventh Annual Music City Classic in Macon, Ga. on Oct. 9. The game is sponsored annually by the 100 Black Men of Macon.

Albany State will celebrate Homecoming '04 against the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. The Golden Rams will have back-to-back road games against SIAC rivals on Oct. 23 against the Benedict College Tigers in Columbia, SC and the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers on Oct. 30.

The Golden Rams will finish its regular season against conference rival, Fort Valley State University Wildcats, on Nov. 6 in the 15th Annual Fountain City Classic at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga. The Fountain City Classic is touted as one of the biggest and best black college football classics. Kick-off is 1:30 p.m.

The State University of West Georgia Braves was the only team from last year that was dropped from the Golden Rams' 2004 schedule, leaving the Rams with a 10-game schedule.
