Former
UMES Soccer Standout Named Head Coach at Francis Marion
July 24, 2003
FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion University athletic director Murray Hartzler has announced the
promotion of Marty Beall to head coach for women’s soccer.
Beall played two seasons, 1993 and 1994, at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, where he
captained the 1994 squad. Former Men's Soccer Coach Sam Douglass is proud of his former player. I
am happy for Marty and this new chance. He will do a great job there, he really understands the game of
soccer."
Beall, 29, has been an assistant coach for the past four seasons. He replaces Hartzler, who started the
women’s program in 1995. The move will allow Hartzler more time to coach the men’s squad and handle
his athletic directorship duties, including fund raising through the Swamp Fox Club.
“This is a great opportunity for Marty, and a very positive move for our women’s program,” said
Hartzler. “He has proven himself a very capable coach over the past four years, and increasingly so since
I assumed the duties of athletic director. I have all the confidence in the world in his abilities to lead our
program, and to lead it at a very high level.”
Prior to moving to South Carolina in 1999, Beall spent two seasons as women’s assistant coach at the
College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md. He also played one season for a nationally ranked team at
Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. He completed degree requirements for the B.S. degree
in psychology at FMU.
He was an all-state performer as a senior at Damascus (Md.) High School, and played eight seasons with
the Bethesda Soccer Club.
Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school, and club levels, and is in his fourth year as head
coach of the South Carolina Youth-17 Olympic Development Program (ODP) boys’ squad. He holds
advanced national diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
“This is an exciting time for me,” Beall said. “Because I have been here for several years, I am familiar
with the program and the change-over will not be anything major. We have a great group of student-
athletes, and talented players tend to take the pressure off of a coach. They will make my new job much
easier. I am looking forward to this new opportunity.”
This past season, with Beall handling a majority of the coaching duties, the Francis Marion women posted
a 12-6-1 record. The 2003 squad will return eight of 11 starters.
In their previous eight seasons, the Patriot women own a 109-35-4 mark. FMU has never had a losing
season and the Patriots have twice earned invitations to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
UMES last competed in men's soccer in 1997. It is not currently one of the Hawk's 15 sports.
