Weeks Sweeps Baseball Awards
- Former Norfolk State basketball coach and athletic director, Ernie
Fears was funeralized in Washington, DC Tuesday (7/15). He died
last Wednesday of heart failure at the age of 71.
A Tallahassee native and 1992 inductee into the Florida A&M Sports
Hall of Fame, Fears was an assistant basketball coach at FAMU from 1960-62,
after
playing basketball and baseball at FAMU from 1947-51. From 1962-69, he served
as head basketball coach and athletic director at NSU, comprising a 147-31
record, giving him the hightest winning percentage in school history.
After serving
a year as AD, Fears became Director of the Virginia Selective Service Program
in 1970. He later joined the Washington Star Station Group
and had a successful career as a broadcast administrator and motivational
speaker.

HBCU Administrators
- Derek Carter has left Virginia State
University to become Athletic Director at Bowie State.
VSU Associate AD and Women's Basketball Coach Peggy Davis has
been named to replace Carter at VSU. Press reports indicate that Davis
will relinquish her position as women's basketball coach. As a result,
one of her first tasks will be hiring her replacement.
- Fayetteville State University Sports Information
Director Marion Crowe, Jr. has been named College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) University District 3 Coordinator
for the academic year 2003-2004. Crowe's responsibilities will consist of
compiling ballots and other data for the Verizon Academic All-America Teams
in Region III which consists of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina
and Virginia. CoSIDA selects academic teams in 12 sports program. Crowe
previously held position from 1995-2001.
