Patrick Carter has assumed the role
of Director of Athletics at Alabama State University. He replaces
Sonia Price, who replaced Richard Cosby on an interim
basis in August, 2003.

Carter comes to ASU after spending eight years at the Southwestern Athletic
Conference office. Most recently, he served as the Associate Commissioner for
Compliance. In that capacity, his duties included monitoring the compliance
of all ten SWAC athletic programs to conform with the policies of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Carter is a graduate of Grambling State University with a B.S. degree in accounting
and a M.S. degree in sports administration. He previously served as assistant
commissioner for compliance and championships at the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA) from 1991-97 and as assistant athletic director
at Virginia State University from 1989-91.
During his career Carter has served on several NCAA committees. He was a charter
member of the NCAA's Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Internship Program
and is a charter member of the NCAA's Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minorities.
Carter has also represented the Southwestern Athletic Conference on the NCAA
Division I Championship/Competition Cabinet and served as the alternate on
the Management committee. Previously, he served on the Initial-Eligibility
Waivers Committee and is chair of the Home School Subcommittee.
