NCCU Athletics decides not to renew Spence's contract
March 1, 2004
DURHAM, NC -- The North Carolina Central University Department of
Athletics announced Monday that the contract of Head Men's Basketball
Coach Phil Spence will not be renewed.
"We appreciate the service and dedication that Phil has given to the
men's basketball program at NCCU during the past four seasons," said
NCCU Athletics Director William Hayes. "At this time, however, we feel
we need to head in a new direction."
During Spence's four-season tenure, the Eagles posted an overall record
of 49-64 (.434). This year's team finished 16-13 after advancing to the
CIAA championship game.
The process to find Spence's replacement will begin immediately,
starting with the formation of a search committee.
