2004 Division II Softball Championship:
Benedict drops first game to Rollins
May 6, 2004
LAKELAND, Fla. The first-ever postseason appearance for the
Rollins College softball team turned out to be a successful
one, as the third-seeded Tars cruised to a 5-0 victory over
sixth-seeded Benedict College, Thursday afternoon at Barnett
Field in the second game of the NCAA Division II South Region
softball tournament.
Rollins (41-14) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning. Lindsey Manz led off with a double, promptly stole third, and came
home on a Kristin Hughes' single to left field.
The Tars extended their lead, scoring three runs in the fourth inning, all
with two outs. An RBI-double by Manz plated Tiffanie Toner to start the scoring.
After stealing third, Manz scored on a Hughes' single. Hughes would later come
home on a Stacy Sanders' double.
In the sixth inning, Rollins added an unearned run. With one out, Hughes doubled
to left and came around to score after Sanders grounded out to third. After
recording the putout, Benedict first baseman Tiffany White's threw home in
an attempt to retire Hughes, but the throw eluded the Tigers' catcher.
Jamie Elam (34-11) pitched a complete-game shutout for Rollins, scattering
just six singles in seven innings of work. Elam struck out seven batters and
allowed just one walk.
Three Tars recorded multiple hits in the game. Hughes paced the attack, going
three-for-four with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Manz went two-for-four
with two doubles, one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Kelly
Cruz was two-for-three with a double.
Tycia Butler (15-7) went the distance for Benedict (28-12), allowing five
runs, four earned, on 10 hits and one walk. She did not record any strikeouts.
Offensively for the Tigers, LaShantaeu Green and Erica Green each posted two
hits.
With their victory, Rollins will advance to play Tampa at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Benedict will drop into the loser's bracket and will face the loser of Thursday's
Florida Southern-Tampa game Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
