Benedict eliminated by Tampa

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Becky Testin and Devlin Daugherty combined
on a no-hitter, and Kristen Abbott singled home Natalie Ippolito
with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead 23rd-ranked
Tampa to a dramatic 1- 0 victory over Benedict Friday afternoon
in the NCAA Division II South Region softball tournament.
Tampa (33-13) received a brilliant starting effort from Testin, who retired
the first 15 Benedict batters in the game, before working out of a jam in the
top of the sixth inning and eventually giving way to Daugherty in the seventh
inning.
In Benedict's best scoring opportunity, Chanika Brathwaite reached on a fielding
error to open the sixth, as her ground ball rolled through the legs of Spartan
third baseman Kami Bird. Brathwaite moved to second on a Lalique-Gumbs Prince
sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Natassia Wilkes, attempted to sacrifice Brathwaite
to third, but Bird's throw eluded Spartan first baseman Kristin Law and sailed
into right field. Tampa right fielder Jenny Luis gunned down Brathwaite at
the plate to snuff out the rally.
Tampa, which stranded eight runners through the first six innings and left
a runner on third base in four separate innings, finally broke through in the
bottom of the seventh. Ippolito led off the frame with a bunt single. She appeared
to be picked off first base, but managed to get caught in a four-throw rundown
and successfully advance to second with a stoen base. Testin, who had moved
to third base in the seventh inning, sacrificed Ippolito to third, setting
up Abbott's game- winning hit.
In six innings, Testin struck out nine and allowed no hits or walks. Daugherty
(20-9) pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two and earning the win.
Despite suffering the loss, Benedict's Tina Sanders (12-6) also turned in
a solid performance. In six-and-one-third innings of work, Sanders allowed
just one run on six hits and one walk.
Tampa will advance to face #7 Alabama-Huntsville in an elimination game Friday
night at 7:30 p.m. Benedict concluded their season with a 28-13 record.
