Sylvan named new head volleyball coach of
Lady Aggies

(Greensboro, NC) - Millicent Sylvan, one of the youngest
head coaches in NCAA Division I, has been announced as
head coach of the N.C. A&T State University volleyball
team.

Sylvan comes to N.C. A&T after a successful three year stint as head coach
at Alcorn State University, where she complied a 70-42 record, which included
a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division Titles and two
SWAC Tournament Championship Games.
Sylvan was an outstanding performer as a student athlete at Alcorn State, lettering
in both track and volleyball. As a member of the track team, Sylvan was a
four-year letter winner who earned several honors. She was a USA Track and
Field Indoor national competitor along with being a NCAA Provisional Qualifier
in the long jump, high jump and the 100-meter high hurdles. She is also the
league’s record holder in the heptathlon with 4,737 points.
Sylvan was named the winner of the E.E. Simmons Award for the 1999-2000 school
year. The award, named after the late Braves athletics administrator, is
given to the top student athlete at Alcorn State University. Sylvan was also
named Most Valuable Player for the Alcorn State volleyball team, in addition
to earning All-SWAC and All-SWAC tournament honors during the 1998 and 1999
seasons.
She also received several scholar-athlete awards. Sylvan was the recipient
of the NCAA Leadership Award in 1999 and 2000. She was a SWAC Scholar-Athlete
from 1996 through 2000 and received the Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete Award
for outstanding academics in spring 2000. Sylvan-Holbert was an active member
in several organizations, including: the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee,
chairperson of the SWAC Student-Athlete Association and the Alcorn State
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Sylvan-Holbert received her bachelor of science degree from Alcorn State in
May 2000 as a Cum Laude graduate.
