Funeral services for the late Wayne Campbell, a former assistant football coach
at Albany State University, will be held Monday, September 29, at 11 a.m. at
the Abundant Life Assembly of God in Punta Gorda, Fla. Campbell died Friday,
Sept. 19, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Campbell came to Albany State in 1991 and coached the offensive line for eight seasons, before joining the football staff at Tuskegee University, where he coached for four seasons. Campbell recently joined the staff at Port Charlotte High School in Port Charlotte, Fla. He has also coached at Florida A&M University, North High School in Fort Myers, Fla., and Rickards High School in Tallahassee, Fla.
He played collegiate football with the FAMU Rattlers and was a member of the undefeated (11-0) 1977 Black College national championship team. He was a member of the American Football Coaches Association, and was chosen to participate in the Atlanta Falcons NFL internship program in 1997, under head coach Dan Reeves and offensive line coach Art Shell.
Campbell earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from FAMU in 1978, and Albany State in 1995, respectively.
He is survived by his wife Sharon and their four children, Ebony, Wayne, Asha and Omari.
