- Southern
and NC A&T begin
baseball playoff run on June 3
- Seven individuals and one relay team from HBCUs have qualified
for the NCAA Div I Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, CA. The men's
and women's championships will be held June 8-11, 2005 at the Alex Spanos
Sports Complex.
HBCUs sent athletes to three different regional meets with three
individuals winning their events. The top five individuals and top three relay
teams advanced to the nationals.
In the Midwest Regional in Norman, OK, Texas Southern's Tremedia
Brice won
the women's 200m dash (23.07) and finished second in the 100m dash (11.33) to
qualify for the nationals in two events. She is the only female from an HBCU
to qualify for the nationals.
Her teammate, Marcus Harris qualified by finishing
second in the high jump with a leap of 7'1" (2.16m).
Jackson State's Michael Tinsley won the 400m
hurdles (49.05) at the Mideast Regionals in Bloomington, IN. He then joined Cori
Cloyd, Terry Estwick and Joel Williams anchoring
the JSU 4X400m relay team to a third place finish (3.04.7) in the event.
At the East Regionals in New York City, Florida A&M's
Kevin Hicks win the men's 800m run (1:49.38). FAMU's Kerry Dixon finished
third in the high jump (2.11m). NC A&T's Everett Bruce finished
fourth in the triple jump (15.57m) and Savannah State's Eric Keddo finished
fifth in the 110m hurdles (14.00).
