S.C. State Women Win 2005 MEAC Tennis Title

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – South Carolina State (23-1) defeated Hampton,
4-2 in the championship match of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women’sTennis
Championship ending the Lady Pirates three-year reign as MEAC Champions. Gisel
Brito, who finished 3-0 in the tournament, won the fourth and deciding match
in straight sets to earn the Outstanding Performing Award.
S.C. State won their second title in school’s history. The Lady Bulldogs
won the inaugural MEAC Women’s Tennis title in 1986. The Lady Bulldogs
will now advance to the NCAA tournament to face an opponent to be determined
later.
“We played a tough team today and we worked really hard from day one and
it feels good now,” said South Carolina State coach Hardeep Judge.
Hampton’s Lucia Kapinska and Jana Korycankova defeated S.C. State’s
Vesna Popac and Alexis Panton, 9-7 winning the doubles point for the Lady Pirates,
as they took two out of the three doubles matches.
The Lady Bulldogs tied the match by winning the number six singles match, as
Alexis Panton easily defeated Jana Korycankova, 6-0, 6-1.
Hampton’s Kristyna Pesatova broke Vesna Popac’s serve to win the
number one singles match, 6-2, and 6-2 moving the Lady Pirates in front 2-1.
After winning the first set, Milina Borisev battled back from a 0-4 deficit in
the second set defeating Elena Besedova, 6-2, 6-4 tying the match at 2-2.
”The girls stepped it up in the singles, especially Milina who gave us
a boost after we lost the doubles match, said Judge. “She’s our team
captain and she played good all tournament.”
Marcela Rodezno defeated Cha Young Kim in the number two singles moving the Lady
Bulldogs ahead 3-2.
Gisel Brito closed out the match defeating Lucia Kapinska, 7-5, 6-4 at the number
five singles match. Kapinska fought back from a 5-1 and was serving to the tie
the match at 5-4 before double faulting on Brito’s match point.
Borisev finished the tournament undefeated at 3-0, along with teammates, Marcela
Rodezno (3-0), Gisel Brito (2-0), and Alexis Panton (3-0).
“We are having a great season and feel that we have a good enough team
to compete in the NCAA tournament,” said Judge.
The men's final featuring S.C. State and Florida A&M was suspended due to
rain. They will conclude on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
