Pirates Hold Off Trinity Western, 67-63, to Win Summer Opener In British Columbia

Langley, British Columbia – The Hampton University men’s basketball team utilized
it’s size advantage inside to fight off a scrappy Trinity Western squad to escape
with a 67-63 win against the host Spartans at TWU’s David E. Enarson Gymnasium
in Langley, British Columbia in the first of a five-game summer tour for the
Pirates.
The first half proved to be a stalemate as the teams entered the break tied 30-30. Bruce Brown dominated the interior for the Pirates in the first half by beginning the game 6-for-6 and scoring 12 of his 13 points before intermission. The Spartans remained close due in part to Hampton’s inability to protect the basketball. The Pirates turned the ball over 12 times, promptly leading to 14 of Trinity Western’s 30 first half points.
The two teams continued to match each other for the first twelve minutes of the second half. Then with a 48-47 lead the Pirates went on an 11-4 run over the next three minutes to push their lead to eight, 59-51, the largest lead of the game by either team. Devin Green, who scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, began the run with a thunderous dunk on an assist by Brandon Streeter. Streeter followed with two quick baskets of his own and Lionel Pehoua capped the run with a three-pointer with 4:35 remaining.
However, the Spartans responded with an 8-0 run of their own and knotted the game at 59 after back-to-back free throws from Logan Kitteringham.
A dunk by Streeter put the Pirates up 61-59 with two minutes remaining. TWU point guard Donald Burton was fouled going to the basket and cut the margin in half after making one of two shots from the line.
Another dunk by Streeter extended Hampton’s lead to three points with one and a half minutes remaining. Kitteringham responded with an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the match at 63 with 1:15 remaining.
A jumper by the Pirates’ Devin Green gave Hampton the lead for good with just under a minute remaining. Jeff Granger added two foul shots in the final seconds to make the final score 67-63.
Logan Kitteringham led the Spartans with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Devin Green led the Pirates with 17 points and seven rebounds. Bruce Brown added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Hampton, while Brandon Streeter finished one rebound short of a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The Pirates return to the court Saturday night a 7 p.m. (10 p.m. EST) when they’ll take on Simon Fraser University.
