Norfolk State expands radio network

August 20, 2004

NORFOLK, Va. — The NSU athletics department and WNSB Hot 91.1 FM have announced the addition of Jeff McCarragher as play-by-play announcer for Spartan football and basketball games this coming season.

McCarragher has spent the last three seasons as the play-by-play announcer for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides baseball club on ESPN Radio 1310 AM. Prior to his work for the Tides, McCarragher spent the 2001 season as the play-by-play announcer for the Erie Seawolves, the Detroit Tigers Double-A affiliate. He has also served as play-by-play announcer for the Greensboro Bats, the New York Yankees Single-A affiliate, and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro men's basketball team.

McCarragher, a graduate of the University of Kansas, began his professional broadcasting career as the host of the pre- and post-game show for the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.

McCarragher begins his work at an exciting time for the athletics department’s involvement with WNSB. Starting this school year, fans can listen to every broadcast of Spartan football and basketball on the Internet for the first time in NSU history.

Each game that is broadcast by NSU’s sports network, WNSB Hot 91.1 FM, can be heard on the web via streaming audio. WNSB’s simulcast went on-line in January, and the radio station’s link is now available on the NSU athletics Web site at www.nsu.edu/athletics/teams/listen.php or by clicking the “Listen Live” link on the main NSU athletics index page, www.nsu.edu/athletics.

“This is a wonderful new feature that we think our fans and alumni world-wide will enjoy,” NSU sports information director Matt Michalec said. “It is also an important advance for our athletics department as we continue to make our Web site a more useful, technologically-advanced tool for fans, recruits, and anyone who wants to follow Spartan athletics.”

In order to hear the games, users must have the latest edition and plug-ins for Windows Media Player, which can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp.

If the link to the radio station is visited during time periods before or after game broadcasts, users will hear regular WNSB programming. For more on WNSB, visit http://www.nsu.edu/wnsb/.
