Southern
reassigns Kerr and looks for new AD
February 12, 2005
Baton Rouge -- In a press conference held Friday at the Magnolia
Room in the Mayberry Dining Hall on campus, Southern University-Baton
Rouge Chancellor, Dr. Edward R. Jackson, informed the public
that a search for a new athletic director is underway after the
current athletic director Floyd Kerr, has agreed to take a new
position as the assistant to the Vice Chancellor for the Academic
Enhancement Program for student athletics when his contract expires
on June 30.
"We want to go in a slightly different direction and
move at a slightly different pace," said Jackson when
asked about the cause of the change.
Jackson feels that the decision was convenient, timely and
essential for the overall excellence of the athletic program
and the University as a whole.
Jackson stated that the new athletic director must be one
who has a considerable amount of experience in the following
areas: athletic administration, fundraising, academic development
of student athletes, budget management, cultivation of resources
for development of the athletic program.
During his five year tenure, Floyd Kerr spearheaded a fundraising
effort that raised over $80,000 for the athletic department
and $150,000 by his third season through his creative fundraiser
called the “Jag-a-Thon”.
Kerr Served as the athletic director at Southern for the last
five years. A graduate of Colorado State University with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education,
Kerr also earned his Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration
from CSU. Kerr was ranked 75th on Sports Illustrated's 101
Most Important Minorities in Sports in June and has served
as a member of two of the NCAA's most powerful committees,
the Division I men's basketball tournament selection committee
and the issues committee.
He helped raise over $80,000 for the athletic department and
$150,000 by his third season through his creative fundraiser
called the Jag-a-Thon.
The athletic department staff met with Kerr at 1:30 p.m. in
a brief, emotional meeting.
"I appreciate the staff. Limited resources, challenging
facilities, but still getting the job done," Kerr said. "It
was very emotional. Some people were very shocked, and they
should be. This is not a long-planned transition. This is very
short. Any time you have change at the top, it's traumatic.
There's lots of change going on at Southern."
Kerr’s transition into his new responsibilities begins
on Jul. 1 of this year.
