January 19, 2005

Hampton, Va. - Head football coach Joseph Taylor has been appointed Assistant Director of Athletics at Hampton University effective immediately. Taylor will remain as head football coach, a position he has held since 1992.

“Our athletics program has grown to the point where Coach Taylor will be an invaluable asset as an assistant athletics director,” said HU President Dr. William R. Harvey. “He is well organized; he stresses character building and integrity. He will be positive addition to the athletics administration.”

The winningest coach in Hampton University football history, Taylor has reached peaks never before seen by the Pirate program. Since his arrival, he has guided the Pirates to three Black College Championships, six conference titles, a Heritage Bowl Championship and four trips to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. As head coach, Taylor has compiled a 13-year record of 109-41-1. Taylor was named the 2004 MEAC Coach of the Year and led the Pirates to a 10-2 record and the 2004 MEAC championship.

Taylor said he is looking forward to serving the Hampton University athletics program with his new appointment. “I am excited that my role has been expanded, I look forward to working closely with (Hampton University Athletics Director) Coach Avery,” he said. “Along with fundraising, my primary responsibility will be to keep the football program moving forward.”

Taylor’s hard work, determination and commitment to excellence have made him a pioneer amongst his peers as evident by his multiple leadership positions. A member of the Board of Directors for the Black Coaches Association, Taylor was most recently recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of four finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award. Taylor was the 2001 President of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA); he is the chairman the AFCA Minority Issues Committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Football Coaches Foundation. In addition, Taylor is also a member of both the Advisory Board for the Wilson Sporting Goods Corporation and the NCAA Division I-AA All-American Selection Committee. He has been selected as the Coach of the Year by several professional organizations such as the Washington, D.C. Pigskin Club, the Norfolk Sports Club, the American Football Coaches Association, and the Atlanta, Florida and Richmond Touchdown Clubs. In 2000, Taylor was honored with the Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award by the All-American Football Foundation and a year later he was inducted into the Western Illinois University Hall of Fame.

“Coach Taylor’s affiliations and contacts with other organizations will be a welcomed asset to the athletics administration,” said Malcolm Avery, Hampton University Athletics Director.
