Hampton alum James Carter will make his second trip to the
Olympic Games as the top US qualifer in the trials.
Hurd, who is legally blind, broke the eight-year-old record
on her fourth attempt. The West Virginia native is the reigning
US Indoor champion and led all qualifiers with a leap of
14.45m. This will be her first trip to the Olympics.
"I cannot explain how good it feels the moment you find
out you're an Olympian," said Hurd. "Being an Olympian and
knowing I'm going to Athens is all I've been waiting for
the last four years.
Carter won his event with a time of 47.68 beating St. Aug's
Bershawn Jackson, who entered the finals as the top qualifier.
After leading for most of the event, Jackson stutter-stepped
on the last two hurdles leaving an opening for Carter, who
drove through the final hurdles into first place.
Jackson finished fourth in the finals just missing a spot
on the team.
"It means so much to make another Olympic Team," said Carter
following the race. "(The) 2003 season was a horrible season
altogether."
Carter qualified for the US Team in 2000 and was runner-up
in this year's US Indoor Championships. The 1999 MEAC Champion
finished fourth in the Sydney Games, just missing a medal.
