Southern
releases 2005 football schedule
March 22, 2005
BATON ROUGE -- The Southern University Department of Athletics is pleased to
formally announce the release of the 2005 football schedule. The 11-game schedule
includes five home games to be played in AW Mumford Stadium on the SU campus,
and also features five road games, and one away game in New Orleans. All five
home games will be broadcast locally by Cox Sports TV, and will be picked up
nationally by CSTV, giving SU SIX nationally televised games.
The Southern University Jaguars will open the season on September 3rd, by traveling
to Lake Charles, LA, to take on the Cowboys of McNeese State. The Jaguars will
travel to Itta Bena, MS for only the second time in the Pete Richardson era,
to take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State on September 10th. The
following week, the Southern Jaguars will host the 2005 home opener, as they
will play the Panthers of Prairie View A&M, on September 17th. The last week
of September will see the Jags host perennial SIAC powerhouse, the Rams of Albany
State University.
In October, the Southern Jaguars will begin the month by facing off with one
of their newest football rivals, Alabama State, in Mobile, AL, on October 1st,
in the annual Gulf Coast Classic. SU will then return to AW Mumford Stadium to
host three home games in the month, first by hosting the Bulldogs of Alabama
A&M University for Southern University Homecoming 2005 on October 8th. The
following weekend (October 15th), the Jags will host the Jackson State Tigers
in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1998. Southern will then host on October
22nd, the Braves of Alcorn State University for Senior Night. SU will have its
first open date on the final weekend of October.
The month of November will see the SU Jaguars on the road on the 5th, as they
travel to Houston to take on the Tigers of Texas Southern University, and in
the following weekend, traveling to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to take on the Golden
Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Golden Lion Stadium. Southern will then have
its second open weekend on November 19th, before closing out the regular season
in “Bayou Classic XXXII”, their annual rivalry game against the Tigers
of Grambling State, to be played in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on
November 26th. That game is televised nationally by NBC.
