Coppin State names head women’s
volleyball coach

BALTIMORE, Md. —Coppin State University has announced
the hiring of Donald Metil as head women’s volleyball coach.
Metil comes to Coppin from nationally-ranked Lees-McRae College
in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he served the past season
as head women’s volleyball coach and assistant men’s
volleyball coach. Under his guidance, the Division II power
fashioned a 30-9 record, including a 16-2 mark in the Carolinas
Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) to capture its eighth straight
league championship. The Bobcats maintained a fifth-place ranking
in the Atlantic region and finished the season ranked 24th
in the nation, advancing to the Women’s NCAA regional
semifinals.
Prior to his stint with the Bobcats, Metil spent two seasons
as head coach at College of Notre Dame of Maryland. In two
seasons he recorded a 40-30 overall record, including a 20-2
mark in the Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference. The
Gators claimed the 2002 AWCC championship in his first season
and finished as runner-ups in 2003.
Metil is a 1996 graduate of California University in Pennsylvania,
where he received a dual bachelor’s degree in secondary
education and sports medicine. He received his master’s
degree in secondary education with an emphasis in sciences
from nearby Loyola College in 2002.
Metil replaces China Jude, who resigned to become interim
director of compliance at Coppin.
