MEAC announces 2006 Tennis All-Conference Honors

April 21, 2006

RALEIGH, NC– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has announced the 2006 men's and women's All-MEAC Tennis teams at the annual pre-tournament banquet at the Clarion Hotel State Capital in downtown Raleigh, N.C. Florida A&M University junior Frank Green III and South Carolina State sophomore Mirian Cruz were named the 2006 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Players of the Year, as voted by the leagues Head Tennis Coaches and Sports Information Directors.

Green led the Rattlers to an undefeated 10-0 mark in conference play. The junior posted a singles record of 21-5 at the number two and three positions and a doubles record of 16-7.

Cruz led the MEAC with her 15-0 record at the number one singles position and was fourth in the league with a 10-4 doubles mark, helping the defending champs to a 10-0 MEAC record for a second consecutive year.

Dr. Carl Goodman of Florida A&M took home Coach of the Year honors for the men. Goodman, who is in his ninth year at FAMU, guided his team to an undefeated record (10-0) in MEAC play and an 18-7 record overall. This was a tremendous feat considering Florida A&M had taken away the men's tennis program and only reinstated the program right before the season began. Should the Rattlers compete in the finals, it will be the eighth consecutive year that Goodman has guided his team to a MEAC championship match.

South Carolina State's Hardeep Judge was named the women's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Under his tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs posted 13 wins and only two losses this season. They even held a 13-match win streak at one point this season. Judge, who is in his sixth year, was named the 2005 men's and women's Coach of the Year. His women's team currently has 20-0 record in MEAC play dating back to last season.

Norfolk State freshman Miroslav Vlcek garnered Rookie of the Year accolades for the men and Bethune-Cookman's Kiara Powell earned the title for the women. Vlcek lead his team with a 14-4 overall record and 9-1 mark in MEAC play. Powell tallied a 19-1 overall record and 10-0 mark in the MEAC. She ended the regular season with an 18-match win streak.

Joining Green and Vlcek on the 2006 Men's All-MEAC Tennis first team are Damon Martin of North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State's Ionut Hurduc and Andrew Mawire, and last year's men's MEAC Player of the Year Seo-Jae Chang of Hampton University.

Along with Cruz and Powell, the remaining members of the 2006 Women's All-MEAC Tennis first team are Hampton's Katerina Jiskrova and Elena Besdova, Bethune- Cookman's Lucia Polakova and Olga Ruislova. Cruz's teammate and last year's women's Player of the Year, Marcela Rodezno, also earned first-team accolades.

The 2006 MEAC Tennis Championships begin on Friday, April 21 at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Tournament Play begins at 8:30 a.m. with No. 1 Florida A&M vs. No. 8 Morgan State and No. 2 Norfolk State vs. No. 7 Howard. For the women, No.1 South Carolina State vs. No. 8 Morgan State and No.2 Bethune- Cookman vs. No. 7 Florida A&M.
