South Carolina State wins MEAC Men's Tennis Championship

Bulldogs defeat FAMU for the third staight year to win title

RALEIGH, N.C. -- South Carolina State defeated Florida A&M, 4-3, to earn their third consecutive MEAC Tennis Championship and sixth overall on Monday at the Millbrook Tennis Center.  The Bulldogs were led by Parantrap Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi was named the tournament's Outstanding Performer after posting an undefeated record in tournament play.

Florida A&M led 1-0 after the doubles matches. Frank Green and William Mau-Asam defeated Andrew Mawire and Ionut Hurduc 8-4 and Simbarashe Happy and Artiom Podgainii won the double point by defeating Dragan Bisercic and Parantrap Chaturvedi 8-3.  Florida A&M continued to lead 2-1 after the Rattlers won at the number two singles position and jumped out to a 3-1lead when Artiom Podgainii defeated Sergey Plotnikov (6-0, 7-5) at the number six spot.

S. C. State battled back and won the next three points. SCSU's Andrew Mawire (No. 1) was down 5-7 in his first set against Clifford Malivert and won 6-3, 6-4 to take the second point for the Bulldogs.

At the number five spot, Chaturvedi was down 5-2 and rallied back from five match points to pull to 5-4. FAMU's Jarrel Williams tallied nine unforced errors during that stretch which helped Chaturvedi in his comeback effort. Chaturvedi took the 6-5 lead and then won the tie-breaker 7-6 (7-3) to tie the match at 3-3.  Meanwhile, on the next court, Hurduc broke a
4-4 tie against FAMU's Frank Green in the third set of the deciding match at the number four singles spot, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.

Chaturvedi earned all-tournament honors, finishing with a 3-0 tournament mark. Joining Chaturvedi on the All-Tournament were teammates Mawire (No. 1), Dragan Bisercic (No. 3) and Hurduc (No. 4) along with Simbarashe Happy (No. 2) and Podgainii (No.6) of Florida A&M.

All-Tournament doubles honors were awarded to Seo-Jae Chang/ Mihai Alin Zorila- Ditiou of Hampton (No. 1) and Florida A&M's Frank Green and William Mau-Asam (No. 2) along with teammates Malivert and Jarrel Williams (No.3).

Head Coach Hardeep Judge (S.C. State) was named the Outstanding Coach for the second consecutive year. Hardeep guided his team to a 3-0 record in tournament play and upset both the number two and one seeds to capture this year's title.
